Not-so-sloppy Joes
It’s so nice to stay inside on cold days and eat a quick, hearty meal. Sloppy Joes are a classic comfort food. We really enjoyed this recipe last week and I wanted to pass it along.
I don’t know the last time you looked at the label on Sloppy Joe sauce in the grocery store, but the ingredients have changed. You can easily make a better version for your family with things you probably already have on hand.
WHAT YOU NEED:
1 lb Broad River ground beef
2 tablespoons butter (get the good grass-fed kind)
½ cup finely chopped onion
8 oz tomato sauce
½ cup ketchup (try the Simply Heinz)
1 tablespoon brown sugar (see note below)
1 tablespoon mustard
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon white vinegar
½ teaspoon salt (try Redmond’s or a pink salt)
¼ teaspoon pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
4 – 6 of your favorite hamburger buns
Note: you can adjust the amount of brown sugar to your preferred sweetness and try adding chopped bell peppers or chili powder to suit your taste
WHAT TO DO:
Brown the ground beef in a large skillet, then remove from pan and set aside
Melt the butter in the skillet, saute the onions for a few minutes, then add the remaining ingredients
Heat on medium/medium-high until boiling and then reduce to simmer for 5 minutes
Now add the ground beef and stir
Spoon the meat mixture onto your buns
That’s it - enjoy!
