Pleasant memory of tasting a gas station ham sandwich in France
I remember my Grandma saying that food didn’t taste as good as it used to. No doubt that was a fact, but how would you even know if you weren’t born in the early 1900’s? If you’ve ever eaten in Europe, you know. Our first stop in France was a small gas station. Jambon (ham) was one of the only French words that came to mind, so jambon sandwiches s’il vous plait!
We had a better meal there than most food at any restaurant here. After quite a few years, I can still remember it well. And the food just got better the further we got from eating at gas stations…
Why? Simple – mostly, it’s the minerals. The soil in Europe is in better shape than the soil here. We have sacrificed quality for quantity since agriculture became “big.” That’s a pretty good trade-off if you are going to go hungry. It’s not nearly as good if you are trying to stay healthy and enjoy tasty food. Of course, not all tasty food is healthy (looking at you, potato chips), but mineral-rich healthy food is always flavorful. You can find it here, but it’s not that easy.
Our soil at the farm is pretty good since it was always a small, grass-based dairy and it will get better as we continue to rotate the cows. Still, we supplement the cows with minerals from natural, pollution-free sources trucked in from Kansas and Utah. We do that to avoid toxic elements like cadmium from commercial sources where much of the supply chain originates in China.
Spring is getting here and the grass is starting to get lush. We expect to have our first beef finished in May. Until then, we wish you tasty, mineral-rich eating and good health!
